We all know how stressful moving house is, especially on the day of the move. Stressful situations do not usually promote wise decision-making. So, if we still have a lot of packing and organizing left to do on moving day, we will either take a lot of things we don’t need to the new house or throw them away in a less than environmentally friendly way. What can we do?

Advance planning. We know this seems like an obvious statement, but it’s true, that getting as much done ahead of time will greatly reduce the stress of moving. But what if you have so much stuff that the thought of sorting it out is a little too overwhelming? Try not to think of it as one big job. Rather, take a few items every day and sort through them. Why not make three piles? One pile you could have for items you want to take to the new house; one pile could be for things to donate, and the third pile could be for a yard sale.

There are some items we tend to accumulate simply because we don’t know what to do with them. Some of those items include old electronic equipment, chemicals, old paint cans, and used batteries. Items like these cannot just be thrown away in a normal trash can, so you will need to find out the best way to dispose of them. If you do these unpleasant tasks way ahead of your move, they will make life a lot less stressful for you.

These are just a few tips for a less stressful move. However, even if you are not planning to move, following these steps will help you have a simple, clutter-free lifestyle.
